Position Summary:

 

The Overnight Awake Support Worker is responsible for remaining fully awake, alert, and responsive for the entire shift while ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of individuals living in a residential setting.

This position provides person-centered support by assisting individuals with activities of daily living, including personal care, bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, mobility, repositioning, medication administration, meal support (as required), and other individualized care needs. All support must be provided in a manner that respects each individual's dignity, privacy, independence, and personal choices.

The Overnight Awake Support Worker maintains a safe, clean, and supportive home environment, completes required documentation, monitors individuals throughout the night, and responds promptly and appropriately to medical, behavioural, or emergency situations. The role requires the ability to work independently, make sound decisions under pressure, and effectively manage crisis situations while following agency policies and individual support plans.

The Overnight Awake Support Worker works collaboratively with coworkers and other members of the care team to ensure continuity of care and high-quality service delivery. Flexibility to work overnight, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts is required.

Key Responsibilities

1. Individual Care

Individual Planning

  • Ensure individual physical, emotional, and spiritual needs are met through appropriate planning and support
  • Assist the Manager in gathering information for Individual Support Plans

Implementation and Monitoring of Care Plans

  • Consistently implement all support and behavioural plans
  • Monitor and document behavioural changes, responses to interventions, and progress
  • Provide input on individual strengths, needs, and program effectiveness
  • Maintain high standards of service delivery
  • Report concerns and progress updates to the Manager

Individual Support

  • Act as a positive role model in all aspects of daily living
  • Communicate effectively using each individual’s preferred communication style
  • Promote autonomy, empowerment, and goal achievement
  • Create a supportive environment that enhances individual potential

Advocacy

  • Advocate for individuals when they are unable to do so themselves
  • Ensure individuals receive appropriate and high-quality services and supports

Health and Safety

  • Maintain a safe, structured, and supportive environment aligned with agency standards
  • Conduct safety and risk assessments with individuals and their support network when required
  • Maintain familiarity with relevant documentation (Risk Assessments, Safety Plans, BSPs, MARs, Diet Plans, Health Care Plans, etc.)
  • Support inventory management and completion of body checks as required

2. Home Operations

Home Maintenance

  • Ensure cleanliness, organization, and upkeep of the home environment
  • Maintain company vehicles and program equipment in good condition

Internal Operations

  • Assist with staff scheduling and coverage when required
  • Complete and maintain documentation including daily logs, shift reports, communication books, trackers, and related forms
  • Communicate relevant updates to the Supervisor and Management in a timely manner

Structural Safety

  • Comply with all occupational health and safety (OHS) standards related to the physical environment
  • Stay informed on OHS guidelines and committee updates

3. Health and Safety

Emergency Planning

  • Follow established emergency protocols
  • Participate in emergency drills and submit required documentation
  • Support maintenance of emergency kits and preparedness materials
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies including fire, power loss, or health crises
  • Follow WHMIS guidelines and safety procedures

Records and Compliance

  • Ensure all health and safety records are current, accurate, and accessible
  • Maintain documentation including risk assessments, MARs, emergency plans, inspections, and evacuation procedures

OHS Competency

  • Stay current with WorkSafeBC, CARF, and organizational safety standards
  • Apply safety practices consistently in daily work

Medication Administration

  • Administer medications according to physician orders and organizational policies
  • Maintain accurate medication records and ensure safe storage of all medications

4. Teamwork and Professional Development

  • Maintain strong understanding of individual needs and home operations
  • Model professional behaviour consistent with code of conduct and agency expectations
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, supervisors, and management
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development requirements

5. Communication

6. Documentation

Reporting

  • Complete all required internal, external, and medication-related reports accurately and on time
  • Ensure compliance with organizational documentation policies

Charting and Tracking

  • Maintain detailed and accurate daily logs and individual data records
  • Ensure documentation meets standards for clarity, accuracy, and completeness

Inventory Management

  • Document and report inventory needs or issues to management in a timely manner

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

QUALIFICATIONS 

Education 

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working with Autism OR an educational background in the Social Services or related field
  • Diploma and/or degree in the Social Services or related field an asset  
  • CPI and/or Mandt certification and training 
  • First Aid training (Condition of Hire) 
  • Class 5 driver’s license

  • Experience in application and understanding of behavioural support plans
